There can be a lot of reasons why one may want to consider going to a therapist.

Now, if you are like me and you are in the UK and here particular in London, finding a good therapist isn’t necessarily easy. And this isn’t because there aren’t any, quite the opposite:

There are so many that finding a good one can be quite a challenge.

One reason for that is that most people who are looking into getting some form of therapy don’t even know what to look for in a therapist. The fact that this area in the United Kingdom isn’t well-regulated, meaning that pretty much everyone can call themselves a “therapist” isn’t exactly helping either.

The first thing that you should look for when choosing a therapist is that he or she is accredited. In the United Kingdom, there is one overseeing organisation,  that is the BABPC, which is the lead organisation for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in the UK and Ireland. So if your therapist is accredited with the BABPC this is already a good sign that there are qualified to help you.

So once that is checking out, you may possibly want to check where exactly the therapist is located. Obviously you don’t want to travel a long time just to get there for your sessions. This can be the second important factor.

Thirdly, if you think you found a good CBT therapist, it can help you write down questions that you may have. Phone or email them and ask, for example also in regards to how flexible they are with their hours, those kind of things.

Lastly, and this is something that I personally found extremely helpful is that you may want to check whether the therapist is also offering online sessions. This can be good for all kinds of reasons. First, it obviously way more convenient if you can get a consultation over the Internet rather than needing to go to the therapist the person. Although in general face-to-face therapy sessions may be best, it still great if you have the option to check in with your therapist over the Internet, especially now with the coronavirus pandemic.
